Optimus Dime
Project Overview:
Optimus Dime is a self-branded concept for a cryptocurrency exchange platform, envisioned to provide a streamlined, secure, and visually engaging trading experience for retail investors in the crypto market. This case study was a personal venture by myself to explore fintech UX/UI design—covering everything from branding (the name is a playful nod to “Optimized Dime,” suggesting saving money) to the interface for buying, selling, and tracking cryptocurrencies. The project was not for a commercial client but rather a comprehensive concept study to demonstrate capabilities in complex application design.
Design Challenge & Goals:
Designing a crypto exchange platform poses unique challenges: how to simplify the presentation of very complex, real-time financial data and actions for users who may be beginners, while also meeting the expectations of more experienced traders. The goal for Optimus Dime was to lower the barrier to entry for new crypto investors by creating an interface that is as approachable as a banking app, without overwhelming jargon, yet robust enough to instill confidence in security and reliability. Specific objectives included: a clear dashboard where users can see their portfolio at a glance, easy workflows for executing trades (buy/sell), informative visuals (like simple charts) to track performance, and strong security cues (2FA prompts, withdrawal confirmations) to reassure users. The aesthetic goal was to stand out from typical dark, data-dense trading platforms with a cleaner look that still feels dynamic and tech-forward.
Process:
Domain Research:
Analyzed popular crypto trading apps and websites (e.g., Coinbase, Binance, and Robinhood’s crypto interface) to identify common features and pain points. It was noted that while power users appreciate advanced charts, new users often find the interfaces intimidating. Gathered input from some acquaintances who had an interest in crypto but felt hesitant using existing platforms—common feedback included confusion about charts and fear of making mistakes in transactions. These findings guided a focus on simplicity, education, and error prevention in the design.
Brand and Concept:
Chose the name “Optimus Dime” to evoke optimism in investing and a friendly persona (even referencing the pop-culture “Optimus Prime” for a bit of fun). Designed a logo and brand identity with a futuristic yet friendly vibe: a stylized coin icon combined with a shield shape to imply security. The color palette using a vibrant green (to add energy and guide attention to key actions or information).
Wireframing User Flows:
Created wireframes for each step of these flows. For onboarding, included educational tooltips explaining terms (what is a wallet, etc.). The dashboard wireframe was kept minimal: total portfolio value, major movers, and alerts. The trade screen wireframes emphasized clarity – a simple form to enter amount and a big confirmation button, with conversion rates displayed clearly. Also wireframed a “Learning Center” section for users to read basic guides (to further address the newbie friendliness goal).
UI Design:
Developed high-fidelity screen designs in Figma for both a responsive web app and a mobile app view. The interface uses a lot of whitespace and simple charts; for example, asset performance is shown with a clean line chart and key stats, avoiding overly complex technical indicators by default (advanced data could be hidden under an expandable section for those who want it). Icons and illustrations were created to reinforce concepts (like a lock icon next to account balance during pending transactions to indicate hold/security). Interaction design was carefully considered: added confirmation modals for all transactions with human-readable summaries (“You are about to buy 0.5 Bitcoin for $X USD”). Incorporated subtle animations (such as a loading spinner that is a rotating coin) to make the experience feel polished. Went through several iterations especially on the buy/sell flow UI, to reduce it to as few steps as possible – ultimately a user can make a trade in just 3 taps from the dashboard.
Prototype & Testing:
Built an interactive prototype of the key screens/flows. Conducted usability testing with 4 users (two with some crypto trading experience and two complete novices). They were given tasks such as “Buy $50 of Bitcoin” or “Check how your Ethereum investment performed this week.” The testing revealed that the novices felt comfortable navigating and appreciated the definitions and warnings provided (e.g., one said the interface “felt less scary than Coinbase”). Experienced users wanted slightly more detail in the charts, so an advanced mode toggle was added on the asset page to switch to a candlestick chart and order book view. Overall feedback was positive on the clean design; minor adjustments after testing included increasing contrast on certain text for readability and optimizing the placement of the logout/security features to be easily accessible.
Security & Visual Cues:
Although not a full build, the design included thinking through security workflows, such as designing the 2-factor authentication prompt screen, password reset flow, and using color cues (green for price up, red for down, but in moderation to avoid overwhelming color usage).
Tools & Technologies:
Figma (UI/UX design and interactive prototyping), Adobe Illustrator (logo and custom icon design), Principle (for demonstrating animation ideas in the prototype).
Results:
Optimus Dime did go live as a public product, but it served as a powerful portfolio piece and learning experience. The final design succeeded in integrating complex functionality into a user experience that testers described as “approachable and clear.” The case study demonstrates my ability to tackle fintech UX challenges. In summary, Optimus Dime achieved its goals as a UX/UI concept by showcasing a secure, user-friendly crypto trading interface and significantly deepening the my expertise in financial application design.

“Sarah worked with us to build a website for our new business. She took relatively vague requirements, and put together a site we are very proud of. Her quality of work is high and she was extremely responsive to any and all questions. She kept us up to date on her progress, and did a good job of asking any clarifying questions. I recommend you reach out to her for your website building needs.”
“I was honored to have apparently Sarah's first Upwork contract. She did a bang-up job for me, helped me get through the process (I'm TERRIBLE at design), and she even put up with my goofy humor. Great work and personality. Would strongly recommend.”
“I would really love to thank you for the website you have designed for our business Razz Hair Studio. You did everything I asked in regards to the website in very quick time, responded to my phone calls at anytime of the day or night and made any little alterations I needed. Also not to mention finding the best deal to host my website. In fact I was that happy with my experience with the first website, thought it was time to build another online purchase website for my ULTIMA Hair Brush business and you did a brilliant design of that one as well.”
“Sarah did an amazing job on the design of my business website for Madison Avenue Hair & Skin. Every step of the way making sure each page, photo and information was just as I wanted. Sarah is very patient and very easy to work with and is always available responding to any questions in a fast and efficient manner. I highly recommend Sarah if you are looking for a dedicated person to improve or build your new website.”
